These reference standards are used to compare and determine D-to-Z diamond color grades by defining precise boundaries between adjacent grades, allowing professionals to evaluate diamonds against the same benchmarks used in GIA. This standard was created in the 1940s and has been used in GIA grading laboratories since the early 1950s. Having this tool allows you to make more informed purchasing decisions and supports more accurate appraisals.
Each diamond is accompanied by its own GIA grading report. The standard sets include six natural diamonds ranging from E to J (with one 0.70-carat set that includes seven stones). Once you own a set, you may request additions in lower color grades. We also provide a copy of GIA's Gems & Gemology publication, Color Grading "D-to-Z" Diamonds at the GIA Laboratory, which outlines best practices for using the sets in diamond color grading.
